Abstract

When an extremity is too weak to perform against gravity, counterbalancing it with weights is especially effective in occupational therapy. Free exercise assists in maintaining range of motion and developing endurance and skill, but does not strengthen the muscle. Resisted active exercise strengthens the muscle and produces hypertrophy.
