Abstract
An operation for heart disease carried out in infancy is likely to be a palliative procedure undertaken with a view toward definitive repair when the patient is older. The ingenious procedure of pulmonary artery banding for large interventricular shunts is typical of this approach. For some lesions, however, a suitable palliative approach is not available, and corrective surgery by means of a pump-oxygenator is the only hope.
