Abstract

Before the surgeon operates on an adult with congenital heart disease, he must evaluate the patient's probable status without operation, decide if operation would improve the patient's chances for a gainful life, and estimate whether the benefits would justify the risks. To make these decisions, the physician often has to catheterize the heart to determine location and size of the shunt and degree of pulmonary hypertension.
