Abstract
The basis for the metyrapone test of pituitary function is described. The carbon tetrachloride-extractable 11-DOCS response is superior to the 17-KGS or 17-OHCS end point. Patients with renal failure require a plasma 11-DOCS measurement for evaluation. Some patients with cirrhosis of the liver fail to give a normal plasma and urinary 11-DOCS response. Patients with Cushing's syndrome due to primary adrenal tumor give a subnormal 11-DOCS response, whereas those with adrenal hyperplasia respond normally.
