Abstract
Treatment for shock is properly directed toward restoration of tissue perfusion and adequate tissue oxygenation. This means that one must assure an adequate volume replacement and provide a milieu which allows operation of the patient's homeostatic defense mechanism. Even when hemodynamic homeostasis is restored, the outcome depends ultimately on correction of etiologic factors.
