Functional Heart Murmurs

Abstract

No child should become a psychologic cardiac cripple because of an innocent heart murmur. Such murmurs are audible in more than 75 percent of all children examined. If the significance of the murmur is not obvious on auscultation, further evaluation is necessary. Usually this can be accomplished with an electrocardiogram and radiographic study of the chest, but some cases may require more elaborate hemodynamic studies.
