Evaluation of Tests for Rheumatoid Factor

Abstract

Many physicians have placed more reliance on the rheumatoid factor test than it deserves. The test often will support a tentative diagnosis of early rheumatoid arthritis and it may be valuable in establishing a prognosis in patients known to have the disease. However, a positive test result is not diagnostic of rheumatoid arthritis, because some normal persons have positive results and many patients with the disease have negative results.
