Abstract

A contraceptive method for the poor or uneducated must meet the test of continued use as well as effectiveness and safety. In a study of 2,003 indigent patients in Dade County, Florida, 76.8 percent retained a double-coil intrauterine device for one year or longer. Only 0.5 percent of the patients became pregnant with the IUD in situ, and few serious complications or infections were encountered.
