Abstract

Accurate diagnosis, verified by microscopic examination or culture, is essential to treatment of onychomycosis. If the causative fungus is a nonbudding type, Trichophyton or Epidermophyton, oral griseofulvin therapy is used. Monilial infections are treated topically. Most patients do not require avulsion of the diseased nails, but the course of therapy is usually prolonged.
