Abstract

New concepts of pathogenesis of osteoarthritis are being developed which may give insight into more specific therapy. Of particular interest is the observation of aspirin's apparent healing effect on damaged cartilage in animals. Meanwhile the best approach to management is a broad and flexible program combining drugs to relieve pain and inflammation, exercise in moderation to preserve function without abusing the joints, supportive therapy, and surgery.
