Abstract
How can innocent heart murmurs be differentiated from those of organic heart disease? A vexing question, but one that can sometimes be answered by determining the location and duration of the murmur and listening for changes in intensity with respiration, during a Valsalva maneuver, after a premature ventricular contraction, with postural changes, and after giving such drugs as amyl nitrite and phenylephrine.
