Abstract

Cure or long-term palliation in esophageal carcinoma is a goal far from reach despite great progress in other surgical endeavors. Very early esophageal carcinomas, particularly those located in the distal esophagus, offer the best chance for cure. In most cases, good palliation depends on early diagnosis and critical selection of the therapeutic approach.
