Abstract

When a patient's red blood cells are hemolyzing, does the defect lie in the cell membrane or in the cell itself, or are external forces at work? To find the answers the physician may resort to tests that directly determine how long red cells survive, that measure hemoglobin breakdown products, or that show the response of bone marrow to the hemolytic process.
