The Need for Education in Clinical Gerontology

, M.D.
Pages 64-66 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Filling the need for clinical gerontologists will take major changes in medical education. One is relaxation of the strict rule of full-time teachers, which is turning university hospitals into research institutes. Education in clinical gerontology has been largely a matter of “catch-as-catch-can.” The patients in nursing homes and homes for the aged make up less than 5 percent of the geriatric population.
