Abstract

A critical review indicates that mass health screening has offered the public less in tangible benefits than in expense, despite low cost per test with automated equipment. A possible solution to the problem is a panel of planners who would be responsible for defining feasible goals, assessing available resources, testing and implementing screening plans, and deciding when programs are economically unjustified.
