Effect of Arthritis on Hand Function in the Elderly

Abstract

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common diseases that affect hand function in the elderly. Part of the physician's role is to teach the patient how to protect his joints and use them judiciously. This involves range-of-motion exercises, splinting, and use of assistive devices to make everyday tasks easier. Failure to institute appropriate preventive and therapeutic measures can have profound psychologic and physical effects on the elderly patient.
