Abstract

Red blood cell concentrates are the transfusion product of choice in many conditions now treated with whole blood. With packed red cells, the oxygen-carrying capacity is treated directly, while volume and electrolyte problems can be flexibly manipulated with accompanying solutions. Separating blood into components improves therapeutic specificity and multiplies the available blood supply.
