Lower Intestinal Obstruction in the Newborn

, M.D.
Pages 137-140 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Plain abdominal roentgenograms are valuable in making a presumptive diagnosis, but barium enema examination clearly shows the exact location of lower intestinal obstruction in the newborn and allows the physician to differentiate among its various causes. Ileal atresia, meconium ileus (fibrocystic disease), Hirschsprung's disease, and meconium plug syndrome are most commonly seen.
