Abstract

The choice of medical environment for an elderly person can be as important as any other basic medical or surgical decision. The setting selected can reverse medical gains already made or can add to them. The usual alternatives are hospital, extended-care facility or nursing home, and the patient's home. Best use of the available facilities requires knowledge of their special advantages and drawbacks.
