Abstract

The blood amylase level should be determined as soon as possible in any patient with abdominal pain of diagnostic concern, as elevation may indicate acute pancreatitis. Although primary therapy of acute disease involves adequate replacement of albumin, plasma and blood, the policy of nonoperative treatment has been challenged. The surgeon has become more aggressive and more successful in managing pancreatic problems.
