Penetrating Wounds of the Heart and Cardiac Tamponade

Abstract

The treatment of choice in penetrating wounds of the heart has long been controversial. Some physicians recommend immediate surgery. Others advocate nonoperative primary treatment when symptoms are mainly those of cardiac tamponade. The debate centers around whether or not to operate after a patient responds to pericardiocentesis.
