Abstract
Picture an elderly person having a few drinks and a steak dinner in a restaurant with friends. This is the setting for a “cafe coronary,” an entity which has nothing to do with heart disease but is the cause of many needless deaths. When it strikes, the victim will be dead in a few minutes unless the airway obstruction is removed. The public, particularly restaurant personnel, should be educated concerning emergency treatment of foreign-body aspiration.
