Abstract

Pneumonia is more likely to complicate influenza in the elderly and those with chronic disease but can strike the previously healthy younger person as well. Age and previous state of health also strongly influence prognosis. Appropriate therapy depends on careful initial assessment of the pneumonia and includes antibiotic treatment as well as intensive respiratory care for patients manifesting acute respiratory failure.
