Abstract

The most common bowel obstruction in old age is caused by incarcerated or strangulated hernia. Other disorders that may present surgical problems in elderly persons are inflammatory disease; diverticulitis; and vascular, urologic and musculoskeletal disorders. However, the geriatric patient tolerates routine elective operation as well as patients less than 60 years old.
