Abstract
To use both old and new vaccines to the best advantage, the physician must be familiar with the current knowledge concerning immunization. For example, routine mumps vaccination is advised only in preadolescence, initial smallpox vaccination should be delayed until the age of 15 to 18 months, and pertussis vaccine should not be given after the age of six years. Although rubella vaccine is still advised at between one and 12 years, immunity appears to diminish, with a possible increase in susceptibility to the disease.
