Abstract

The small office laboratory is convenient for both the patient and the physician, but it should be used for only those procedures within the capabilities of office personnel. Tests performed in most office laboratories should be limited to simple hematologic determinations, urinalysis, and a few other qualitative tests, in addition to the procuring and processing of specimens for referral to larger laboratories. This discussion includes methods for performing simple tests and for maintaining quality control.
