Brief Lapses of Consciousness in Children

, M.D.
Pages 107-109 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Cortically initiated short lapses of consciousness in children are usually not true petit ma I seizures. Often the episodes are preceded by an aura, and the electroencephalogram may show a phenomenon called secondary bilateral synchrony. The diagnostic approach in such lapses of consciousness is different from that in true petit mal seizures. Therapy includes drugs, or occasionally, a ketogenic diet.
