Pitfalls in Interpreting Laboratory Measurements

Abstract

The normal ranges determined in a distant laboratory may not apply to a specific group of patients. Thus, the clinician must assist the laboratory director in determining the normal ranges for his patients. The ranges vary with the methods used and are affected by the random error of the method. Other factors influencing laboratory measurements are sensitivity and diagnostic specificity of methods, patient preparation, medications, and hospital procedures.
