Pericardial Calcification Simulating Extravasation of Barium

Abstract

Calcification in the cardiac silhouette or in adjacent vessels often is seen on chest x-rays. Even in children, calcification of the ligamentum arteriosum occurs frequently. However, calcification so massive as to be confused with the barium used in study of the upper gastrointestinal tract is unusual. In such a case, careful study of adequate chest films may prevent a diagnostic mistake.
