Abstract
Syndromes reflecting the close relationship between liver and nervous system disorders are well known, but the mechanisms involved are not completely understood. Discussed here are conditions resulting from failure of the liver to detoxify metabolites and from portal-systemic shunting of blood, from deficits in liver functions, and from a genetically determined biochemical defect or a suspected common but unidentified pathogenic agent. For some of these disorders, treatment is unavailable. Others are diagnostic challenges but can be treated.
