Theories of the Pathogenesis of Cystic Fibrosis

Abstract

The basic defect in cystic fibrosis is not known, but current evidence points to action of a humoral substance on cells of the exocrine glands. The resulting interaction increases metabolic activity within the cell, altering cell membrane permeability, changing electrolyte concentrations, and increasing mucopolysaccharide synthesis.
