Abstract

Only by expanding our effort in the direction of primary prevention are we likely to make major progress toward control of heart disease. The secondary approach of waiting to intervene until disease is overt is much less promising.

Programs should aim for control of high-risk factors early in life. The disease that underlies the coronary attack of middle age begins in childhood.
