Abstract
In westernized countries most gallstones are composed chiefly of cholesterol. Normal bile is all liquid, whereas bile from patients with cholesterol cholelithiasis also contains cholesterol in crystalline form that has precipitated from solution. This indicates that the solubility of cholesterol in bile is limited. Within the next 10 years, a rational, safe method for preventing cholelithiasis in high-risk groups and for dissolving “silent” gallstones will be developed.
