Abstract
Patients with heart failure should be hospitalized for observation, therapy and rest. Digitalis is used in all types of heart failure, but is most effective when the failure results from chronic muscle malfunction. The optimal or loading dose should be individualized and largely empirical. Method and appropriate interval of administering the optimal dose depend on the urgency. Digitalis toxicity is common because it has many predisposing factors and warning signs often are difficult to recognize.
