Intrauterine Contraception

An Overview

Abstract

The mechanism of action of the intrauterine contraceptive device is still unknown despite extensive research. The method is inexpensive, requires only one episode of motivation, and is not associated with coitus. Many women abandon the device because of spontaneous expulsion or bleeding and cramps, and a few become pregnant with the device in place. Despite its limitations, the IUD remains the most effective contraceptive method for women unable to use oral contraception and for family planning among populations whose low level of sophistication precludes effective oral contraception.
