The Older Patient With Hearing Deficit

, M.D.
Pages 231-234 | Published online: 18 Apr 2016

Abstract

Significant loss of hearing occurs in 30 to 50 percent of persons more than 65 years of age. The unfamiliar setting of the physician's office increases the patient's apprehension about his impaired hearing, complicating physician-patient communication. Potential misunderstandings arising from the hearing deficit and its effect on behavior can be avoided by using the practical techniques outlined here.
