Abstract
Heart failure may be treated by decreasing physical activity and salt intake and giving digitalis. When these measures prove inadequate, diuretics may be added to the regimen; however, because of their adverse side effects, these agents should be given cautiously. Combined use of complementary diuretics may be necessary for maximal effectiveness. Pulmonary edema, usually caused by disease of the left side of the heart, is a true medical emergency requiring immediate therapy. Morphine is the drug of choice, except in patients with severe chronic lung disease.
