Viewpoint of a Rheumatologist

Abstract

Total replacement of both articulating surfaces of the arthritic hip has met with great success in England. Polyethylene or metal prostheses replace the femoral head and acetabulum and are rigidly secured with acrylic cement or by mechanical means. Postoperative recovery is rapid. Patients experience astonishingly complete relief from pain and stiffness and many walk without discomfort within a few weeks.
