Abstract

Age-related changes in the macular area may or may not be associated with impairment of vision. These changes include macular wrinkling, lipoid degeneration, drusen, pigmentary or cystoid degeneration, areolar atrophy, and disciform degeneration. A new concept of the mechanism of macular degeneration may make more effective therapy possible.
