Polymyalgia rheumatica

Abstract

Polymyalgia rheumatica has a peculiar predilection for the elderly and is characterized by severe proximal muscle pain and an unusually high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The cause of the pain is unknown, but daily prednisone therapy brings complete relief. A correlation does exist between polymyalgia rheumatica and giant-cell arteritis, but the exact nature of the correlation is speculative.
