Abstract

Dietary therapy is the first line of defense in treating hyperlipoproteinemia and often is all that is needed to lower plasma lipid levels to normal. The specific abnormality of lipid transport in each of the five types of hyperlipoproteinemia determines whether fat, cholesterol or carbohydrate should be restricted and to what extent. Regular checkups and the services of a dietitian contribute to successful dietary therapy.
