DRUG dependence

Abstract

There is a difference between drug misuse and drug abuse. If a college student takes a drug that has been prescribed for one of his friends, this is drug misuse, but if a problem develops from his self-use of a mind-altering chemical substance, this is drug abuse. Drug dependence is another term for chronic drug abuse. Part of the importance of these distinctions lies in pointing out to physicians how they may inadvertently contribute to the drug problem in this country.
