Suppression of Postpartum Lactation

Abstract

The physician is often called upon to suppress postpartum lactation, either because a puerpera does not wish to breast-feed her baby or because a medical contraindication exists. The usual clinical means of inhibiting lactation are not always satisfactory.

Experience has shown that a single injection of a long-acting androgen-estrogen combination toward the end of labor or immediately after delivery is the most efficient procedure for medicamentous prevention of lactation.
