PRACTICAL OTOLARYNGOLOGY

Nasal Obstruction

, M.D.

Abstract

Bilateral nasal obstruction in a child suggests enlarged adenoids, allergy, or deviated septum, in that order. Unilateral obstruction suggests choanal atresia or foreign body. In adults the nasal passages may be blocked by polyps, a benign or malignant tumor, or a septal hematoma. Then, of course, there are the patients with a long list of symptoms of “sinus trouble” who are seen by otolaryngologists after they have tried all the advertised remedies. Getting them to stop using nose drops can be the hardest part of treatment.
