Abstract

If a reasonable trial of dietary therapy proves unsuccessful in treating hyperlipoproteinemia, drug therapy may be indicated. However, such therapy should not be offered as a substitute for dietary restrictions. Unfortunately, all the drugs currently available to the practicing physician have side effects. The physician must decide whether the treatment is worth the inconvenience to the patient. In the elderly and in patients with borderline elevations of plasma lipids, this decision may be difficult.
