Abstract

The collective experience with kidney transplantation is giving partial answers to some of the perplexing issues relating to rejection, histocompatibility and immunosuppression. The information gained may help to explain why grafts fail in some well-matched recipients and succeed in some mismatched ones. The high morbidity and mortality associated with excessive immunosuppression are recognized. Presumptive therapy of rejection can be a serious mistake.
