Abstract
A critical review of factors that may be involved in the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis suggests that the disease may be a viral infection or an autoimmune disease. If the cause is autoimmunity, a viral infection may trigger the reaction; if it is a viral infection, a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the foreign matter undoubtedly would contribute greatly to nervous system damage. There is no universally accepted treatment. The measures used vary from vitamins and diet to steroids and immunosuppressives.
