Changing Ideas About Hiatal Hernia

, M.D.

Abstract

Hiatal hernia itself does not produce gastroesophageal reflux, esophagitis or symptoms. Although these conditions rarely occur without the capacity for herniation, they should not be considered complications of herniation. Reflux of gastric contents is caused by intermittent or continuous gastroesophageal incompetence and sometimes causes heartburn, discomfort, and pain high in the epigastrium. Treatment in most cases is conservative, and its intensity should be consistent with the intensity and pattern of symptoms.
