Abstract

Pregnancy causes dramatic alterations in maternal physiology to benefit the fetus. Variations from normal function in all organ systems are reflected in clinical laboratory determinations. The physician must be aware of the degree and significance of these variations to avoid errors in interpretation. The first part of this two part article discusses physiologic alterations in cardiovascular, respiratory and renal status during pregnancy.
