Abstract

Recognition of a hyperthyroid or hypothyroid state in a pregnant patient is important for the safety of both mother and fetus. However, assessment of thyroid status is complicated by increases in thyroid function values that normally occur in pregnancy. This discussion pinpoints the critical areas in evaluation and describes the laboratory procedures necessary for correct diagnosis.
